His service, however, began long before his time in the House.  Indeed, the House's Memorial Resolution chronicles Joe John's 50 years of service to the people of North Carolina, including as an Assistant District Attorney, Director of the State Crime Lab, and Judge on the North Carolina Court of Appeals, all before he was elected to the House.  He was one of the only people to serve at the highest levels of the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial Branches.  In my time in the House since his passing, I've come to see how much his colleagues on both sides of the aisle admired and respected him, not just for his experience and dedication but also for his humility and integrity.  He embodied public service.

Representative John leaves incredibly big shoes to fill, and I promise to keep his legacy firmly in mind as an inspiration and an expectation for my own work.

On January 29, 2025, I was appointed to represent House District 40 after the passing of Representative Joe John, Sr.  Like you, I mourn the loss of a dedicated public servant who gave so much to North Carolina—as a judge, senior executive official, and legislator.  Rep. John honorably represented District 40 in the North Carolina House for eight years, and he was beginning his fifth term.
